Quite happy with his luck, and assuming that Haleen wanted to be able to exact her own revenge, both Kite and her previous owner were extremely surprised when Haleen declared Kite to be a free woman. Rather than the payment they had just been negotiating, she asked for Kite's ownership. Immediately, Kite's owner called for her head, but Haleen - in a split second - sized up Kite and made a counter-offer. Haleen was being hired for a task, and as Haleen and Kite's owner did business, Kite spilled a drink in Haleen's lap. Haleen came to Kite's master, a thin and greedy merchant of Katapesh who was well-known (or at least well-rumoured) for being a pesh dealer in some of his more shady dealings. A Katapeshi slave from birth, Kite was apparently parentless, the very definition of friendless, and saved only by the good graces of a woman named Haleen.
